Understanding Resale Documentation
Sales tax documentation can be surprisingly complicated, and requirements vary from state to state. A seller’s permit or sales tax license generally shows that your business is registered, but it is not always the same document a seller needs to keep on file to support purchases made for resale.
That often catches a lot of professionals off guard, so we here at Cultured Beauty built our professional-account process around doing the research on our end and giving you the specific form or process that applies to your state.

So… why isn’t my seller’s permit enough?
Your seller’s permit, sales tax license, or registration generally establishes your relationship with your state. A resale certificate tells a seller like Cultured Beauty that the products you are purchasing from us are being purchased for resale and documents why sales tax is not being collected on those qualifying purchases. Depending on the state, that may be a Multistate Tax Commission certificate, a Streamlined Sales Tax certificate, a state-specific form, or another recognized process. That’s why simply uploading a permit or license you already have may not give us the document we actually need for our records.
Why does Cultured Beauty ask for different forms in different states?
Because the states made it complicated and we’re trying not to.
There is unfortunately no single resale document that works exactly the same way everywhere in the country. Some states participate in standardized programs, some require their own form, some have additional verification requirements, and some don’t require a resale certificate at all. Rather than asking every professional account to figure that out themselves, we’ve built the state-by-state research into our onboarding process. If we ask you for a particular form, it’s because that is the documentation path we’ve identified for your state.
Why are we so specific about completing the form we send?
Because we’re trying to prevent the exact kind of back-and-forth nobody wants. If we request an MTC resale certificate and receive a seller’s permit instead, we may still have to come back and ask for the resale certificate later. The same thing can happen with business registrations, sales tax licenses, Certificates of Authority, or other tax documents that are perfectly legitimate documents but serve a different purpose. So when we provide a specific form or link, the easiest thing is simply to complete that form and send it back to us.

What happens if I don’t submit resale documentation?
Nothing dramatic.
Your Cultured Beauty professional account can remain active. Until we have acceptable resale documentation on file, we’ll simply collect sales tax on purchases where applicable. If you decide later that you’d like tax-exempt resale purchasing, you can complete the requested documentation at any time. There is no need to worry that your professional account is in jeopardy because a tax form is still outstanding.
What should I do when I receive a resale-documentation email?
Use the exact link or form provided in the email. Complete the requested document, sign it where required, and submit it through your personalized Cultured Beauty link. Please don’t substitute a seller’s permit, tax license, business registration, or another tax document unless the instructions specifically ask for it. And if anything about the request is confusing, just ask us. We would much rather answer the question than have you spend your afternoon digging through state tax websites. And sometimes uploading a file can be a pain- so if you need to print it and fill it out or run into any weird tech issues, just email it to admin@culturedbeauty.com.
Our goal is not to become the tax-police branch of the skincare industry. We want to collect the right information once, maintain clean records, and stop bothering you about it.
